ICPR National Workshop On
Inter- Disciplinary Ethics

[ 2nd – 3rd August, 2012 ]

The department of philosophy, Pondicherry University would like to establish the centre for inter-disciplinary ethics with a support of ICPR. In this connection the department is going to organize a workshop to discuss the modalities and focus area of centre in institutionalizing the inter-disciplinary ethical ideas and its relevance in the contemporary world as well as in the academic field. Since early period, the ethical principles have been playing crucial role in the life of the individual. For example the father of philosophy, Socrates emphasized on the ethical principles thereby he said that knowledge is virtue. In India there were numerous moral thinkers in the earlier period. In modern times, Gandhi and other moral philosophers emphasized on these principles. Recently inter-disciplinary approach in ethical studies is emerging as new trend. This gives wider scope and minimizes the monotonous and mechanistic approaches in the syllabus and curriculum. The disciplines like science, technologies and managements are becoming the mere materialistic nature of studies in lack ethics in its syllabus. Thereby it is the necessary condition to promote the ethical principles in these areas of study in respect of developing the humanistic tendency among the students, scholars and teachers. The inter-disciplinary ethical study centre can act as a hub for various disciplines by bringing out the common code of ethics in the levels of teaching and pursuing research on one hand. On the other hand it will try to develop specific code of ethics for certain subjects based on their own nature. Interdisciplinary-ethical study will find new areas of research in various disciplines with the moral concern, so that it will ensure the humanistic intellectual outputs in future.

The Department of Philosophy is going to organize a two day workshop to discuss the scope of inter-disciplinary ethical studies and research by high lightening the relevance of ethical principles in various disciplines. The aim of the workshop is to obtain suggestions from scholars of diverse disciplines working in the field of ethics. The focus will be on importance of institutionalizing the principles of inter-disciplinary ethics and challenges at the centers of inter-disciplinary studies.
